While building the counseling relationship is vital for progress. It is important to provide treatment that has been shown to provide the best results to assist with developing coping skills to manage life stressors/changes. The evidence-based approach that has best supported my counseling style is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and person-centered therapy. I have found the combination of these approaches to have the best success with meeting clients where they are and experiencing growth/progress.
It is my belief that in life we can only guarantee change. If we embrace this concept it will assist us with adjusting. With a combination of an internal and external locus of control; we can learn when we have control and when to change course.
